1. Keep Your Gaze Up Not Down
When you’re a beginner, it’s easy to feel like looking down at your feet will make you a better dancer. It feels natural and allows you to focus on how your feet are moving. However, dancing is much more about feeling than seeing your movements.
Instead of staring down at your feet and hyper-focusing on the instructions given to you, just try to remember how each step feels. You’ll be shifting your weight in different directions at different parts of the song. The more you repeat the movements and hear the song over and over, the easier it is to avoid looking down at your feet.
2. Experiment With A Few Different Types Of Dance
Part of the fun of dance class is experimenting with different types of dance. Don’t force yourself to feel limited about what kind of dance you can practice. Learning new moves may help you find your rhythm with old routines that you already know.

4. Try Not To Put Pressure On Yourself
Dance class should be fun, so try not to be hard on yourself. Always keep in mind that a dance will be challenging the first few times you try it. You just have to trust that it will keep getting easier with every practice. You’ll also find it easier to learn if you’re calm and relaxed.
Part of relaxing during dance class is making sure you’re in the right class. There’s nothing wrong with taking a beginner class to establish some fundamentals before moving on to more challenge dances. If you’re feeling lost or exhausted during class, reevaluate if the style and level of the class.
5. Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Questions
If you feel like you’re just not getting a certain move, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Sometimes asking the teacher to repeat the move slower will help you get over your troubles. It’s also beneficial to see the move in slow motion and real time. Don’t hesitate to ask your teacher to repeat a step, you’re likely not the only one in the class who wants help.
Another tip that will help you master new dances is to figure out how you learn. If you’re a visual learner, make sure you have a good angle of the teacher during the class. If you’re an auditory learner, having someone establish a count or using a metronome can help you get the timing down. Once you figure out your preferred style of learning, mastering new dances becomes much easier.
