4 Very Interesting Facts About Steel

When you ask someone to make a list of strong materials, you can be fairly sure that steel will be on the list. How did steel get this reputation, the answer is simple, steel is a very durable and long-lasting metal that is used in nearly all construction projects around the world. There are many reasons why this is the case, the main one is that it is easy to shape and it can bear heavy loads without any loss in shape.

There is so much more to steel than its strength though. So much in fact that we thought you would like to know a little more about it.

1. More than 3,000 grades of steel exist

This may come as a surprise to many, but there are so many different types of steel out there. The technology that creates steel alloys is constantly advancing so that stronger and more lightweight steel can be engineered for the construction industry.

As a great deal of investment into research on how to improve on this already fantastic building material continues, the number of steel grades will continue to grow. For this reason, steel will remain popular for a long time to come as it is always improving and becoming more cost effective.

2. Steel can be recycled

Not only can it be recycled. It is one of the world’s most recycled materials. Steel is a material that is very easy to remove from other waste products as it is recycled. So easy, that it can be sent to recycling facilities and processed to make steel that is just as good as it was before if not stronger.

The best part is that no matter how many times the steel is recycled, it retains its properties. This makes it quite unique among metals.

3. Stainless steel doesn’t rust, well…

The truth is that it is will not rust as long as it is properly maintained and engineered. There are some conditions where steel can rust but they are fairly easy to avoid. If any plain steel is introduced into the surface of the stainless steel alloy then the oxide layer that protects stainless steel can be compromised. With proper care, production and transportation this is very unlikely to happen.

If you want the stainless steel that you use to remain in the best possible shape then you will need to make sure that it has been manufactured by the best and it has been properly treated.

4. Steel is a much more cost-effective material than plastic

A bold claim perhaps, hear us out. Even though plastic is a lot cheaper by weight than steel, steel will last a lot longer. Steel can take a lot more punishment and survive in conditions that would destroy plastic in no time at all.

Steel has a much higher tensile strength compared to any plastic and can keep its shape in extreme temperature that would warp any plastic out of shape. Plastic can crack when even a small amount of pressure is applied in the right area. Steel, on the other hand, will be able to survive a lot of strong and powerful impacts to virtually anywhere and still keep its shape.

It is this overall strength and durability that allows any steel form to last much longer than a plastic equivalent. Steel forms could last longer than a decade in conditions that a plastic form would not last moments. Over time, the cost of replacing plastic forms will exceed the investment of purchasing from a steel supplier and choosing steel as the material of choice.
